Bytes to kB Converter

Convert bytes (B) to kilobytes (kB). 1 byte = 0.001 kilobytes (exact)

1 byte = 0.001 kilobytes

How to convert bytes to kilobytes

FormulakB = B × 0.001

Multiply the value in bytes by 0.001. To go the other way, multiply by 1,000 (or divide by 0.001).

A byte is smaller than a kilobyte: it takes 1,000 bytes to make one kilobyte.

Worked examples

  • 1 byte1 B × 0.001 = 0.001 kB
  • 5 bytes5 B × 0.001 = 0.005 kB
  • 10 bytes10 B × 0.001 = 0.01 kB
  • 20 bytes20 B × 0.001 = 0.02 kB
  • 100 bytes100 B × 0.001 = 0.1 kB

About the units

Byte (B)

Eight bits; the basic addressable unit of memory. One byte equals 8 bits (b).

Kilobyte (kB)

1,000 bytes (decimal). Some software still uses “KB” for 1,024 bytes; that is properly a kibibyte (KiB). One kilobyte equals 8,000 bits (b).

Frequently asked questions

How many kilobytes are in one byte?

There are 0.001 kilobytes in one byte, and this value is exact by definition.

How do I convert bytes to kilobytes?

Multiply the number of bytes by 0.001. For example, 10 B × 0.001 = 0.01 kB.

How many bytes are in one kilobyte?

One kilobyte equals 1,000 bytes. That is the reverse factor, 1 ÷ 0.001.

What is 10 bytes in kilobytes?

10 B = 0.01 kB.

Is this B to kB converter accurate?

Yes. Both units are defined exactly in terms of SI units, so the conversion factor is exact; results are shown to 12 significant figures by default and you can change precision in the converter. Calculations run in your browser using the same tested engine that generated this page.
